Hardy County Library Renovation Recap

Hardy County Library Renovation Recap
Just like most residents of Hardy County, our real estate agents anxiously awaited the unveiling of renovations to the Hardy County Library.  At its Grand Re-Opening Celebration earlier this year, what attendees found was a beautiful Hardy County Library ready for the future with its new bright, spacious, airy, and clean new look.  

A New Beginning for the Library

The Hardy County Public Library has been at the heart of Moorefield, WV for decades, but by the turn of the millennium, this treasured institution had begun to show its age. The library celebrated its 75th birthday in 2014, and just three years later, the ground was broken on a new renovation project that would revamp and extend the current library to include the neighboring property – formerly Puffenberger Jewelry.

The much-needed renovation would result in expanded public work areas, new staff offices and storage space, improved handicap accessibility, a new room for the Children's books collection, better natural lighting, and the addition of roughly 1,000 square feet of space. That said, it wasn't always easy going. 

The construction crew faced some challenges, such as connecting two buildings at different elevations and having to relocate the library's HVAC system. The project tested the public's patience as well, forcing nearby sidewalks to be closed off, to say nothing of the temporary closure of the library itself. 

Of course, all the work paid off. Now that the Hardy County Public Library is once again open to the public, it's clear that the renovations have resulted in a remarkably improved and expanded space. Bright, clean and spacious, the new library offers Hardy County residents and visitors a beautiful place to meet, learn and connect. 

An Ongoing Legacy

Perhaps the most surprising thing about the library renovation project is its origin. The entire project, including the acquisition of the neighboring property, was funded by an endowment from Margaret P. Allen, a former library board member and president who was a driving force behind the library system.

Mrs. Allen passed away in 2000 at the age of 101, having bequeathed $50,000 plus the rest of her estate to the library. This money was invested and grew over the years until it was enough to finance the entire $1.6 million renovation project. Not one penny of public or government money was spent.

Of course, Margaret P. Allen's contribution to the Hardy County Public Library was more than her money – it was also her time, effort, energy, and belief that education and reading are for everyone. It is thanks to her contributions, financial and otherwise, that residents of Hardy County have such a remarkable resource in the Hardy County Public Library.

A Local's Guide to Christmas in Moorefield

Celebrate the Season in Moorefield, WV

When should the Christmas tree go up--before Thanksgiving or after Thanksgiving?  It's a discussion more than one Moorefield homeowner has had with their families. No matter what your personal resolution might be, the Moorefield Lions Club along with the Hardy County Historical Society and the Town of Moorefield say "after Thanksgiving" is the answer.

Our local celebration, beginning on December 2, is the Moorefield Community Christmas Tree Lighting at Welton Park complete with a holiday parade, Santa arriving by horse-drawn carriage, and a band of singing elves.  Santa himself lights our community Christmas tree (donated by May Tree Farm) to welcome the holidays to Moorefield.

All Aboard The Snowflake Express

Come to the South Side Depot on December 7 for a train ride on the Snowflake Express.  Santa and his elves welcome you with cookies and hot chocolate on a train ride to the Festival of Lights.  Say hello to Elsa and Olaf, have a picture with Santa, and sing your favorite carols with our special guests.

Old Time Christmas at Welton Park

A visit to the Mountain State's Old Time Christmas in Petersburg is sure to spark the holiday spirit in all of us.  You'll be in Christmas "awe" as you stroll through the Christmas Festival of Lights at Welton Park.  Enjoy horse-drawn sleigh rides, a visit with Santa, twinkling lights, and a special reading of Clement Moore's "Twas the Night Before Christmas."

Welton Park is one of Moorefield, WV's biggest attractions, and this beautiful, historic outdoor space offers opportunities for fishing, picnicking, hiking, and kayaking. Of course, the park's biggest claim to fame is hosting the town's annual Christmas holiday light display every year. The event seems to grow each year, with as many as 15,000 people gathering to take part in the ceremony. Folks travel from all over to see the holiday lights.
