Pick-Your-Own Farms Near Rockingham County

Farms Rockingham County

Rockingham County has rich soil and optimal weather, which help produce a bounty of gifts at local farms. When our real estate agents want to get back to the land, they head to these great farms for fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

  • Showalter's Orchard & Greenhouse - 17768 Honeyville Rd., Timberville, VA 22853
While Showalter's Orchard & Greenhouse first opened for business in 1965, apples have been grown continuously on the property since the early 1900s. In 1975, Joe and Frances Showalter added a cider press to make use of the "blemished" apples that would otherwise go to waste. Today, Shannon Showalter and his wife Sarah continue his parents' legacy with pick-your-own apples and peaches. Be sure to make time for a visit to the tasting room at Old Hill Cidery near Timberville homes for sale. Hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday.

  • Overlook Produce and Farm Adventures - 609 Friedens Church Rd., Mount Crawford, VA 22841
Do you dream of strawberry shortcake on a warm summer day? It's even better with freshly-picked berries from Overlook Produce and Farm Adventures. During fall, pick your own pumpkins and gourds for festive holiday decorations while the kids try to solve the five-acre corn maze. Fill the pantry and fridge with the assortment of fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat sold at the on-site market. Add some natural beauty to your home with some ficus or African violets from the greenhouse. Overlook Produce is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

  • Hobbit Hill Farm - 6460 Showalter Rd., Mount Crawford, VA 22841
Who says healthy foods don't taste good? Blueberries are high in nutrients, low in calories, and full of juicy sweetness. Take the whole family to pick your own blueberries at the delightfully-named Hobbit Hill Farm. This family-owned farm on the banks of the North River, and near Mount Crawford homes for sale, features USDA-certified organic blueberries, which are "only touched by rain and sunshine." Call ahead for hours.

  • Pebble Hall Wildflowers & Herbs - 11 Pebble Hall Ln., Weyers Cave, VA 24486
Fresh herbs are a wonderful way to flavor your food without adding fat and calories. Spend an afternoon picking herbs by the bag at Pebble Hall Wildflowers & Herbs. Seasonal varieties available include basil, chives, fennel, mint, oregano, sage, tarragon, and thyme. You can also build colorful bouquets of baby's breath, calendula, daffodils, poppies, zinnias, and other wildflowers blooming in the gardens or greenhouse. Even if you don't pick anything, it's worth the trip to stroll the dog-friendly grounds, explore the nature museum, and enjoy a picnic lunch near Weyers Cave homes for sale. Admission is $5 for ages 16 and up, which includes a small bouquet. Hours are 6 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily.

  • White Oak Lavender Farm & The Purple Wolf Vineyard - 2644 Cross Keys Rd., Harrisonburg, VA 22801

How to Create a Hobby Space in Your Home

Hobby room

When you schedule a block of time to enjoy a hobby, it's frustrating to discover that your supplies and equipment are scattered throughout your home, or even worse, that you can't locate them at all. You wind up spending a portion of your craft time tracking down and organizing your stuff. Our real estate agents know that setting up a hobby space in your home is an efficient solution to this problem. Here are some tips to follow when setting up your hobby space.

Work Surfaces

  • Decide What Furnishings You Need
Each hobby requires different equipment and furniture. If you like to build or assemble models, you'll likely want a sturdy work table. However, if you enjoy knitting or crocheting, you'll want a comfortable, supportive chair. The storage that you need should also be personalized to your hobby. Make a list of your storage needs so you can keep them in mind as you create your space. A metal utility cart is a popular storage choice for multiple hobbies because it's perfect for holding smaller bins, and you can easily maneuver it around the room. Before purchasing any new furnishings, consider the room's dimensions and the size of your items to make sure that everything will comfortably fit.

  • Pick the Right Location for Your Space
The ideal area in your home for your hobby space will also depend on your preferred activity. For example, if you like to play an instrument, you'll want a room away from your home's sleeping spaces with additional insulation. Or, if you like to paint and prefer to do so with a lot of natural light, set your space up in a room with windows. Keep in mind any electrical needs that you have for your equipment. If you frequently operate electrical equipment, you'll want to choose a space with access to an electrical outlet. Or, if you have a hobby that requires a large amount of electrical capacity, you may need to upgrade the room's electrical outlets.

  • Make Sure Your Work Surfaces are the Right Height
When using a table, the surface should be the proper height. Otherwise, you risk having to hunch over and potentially straining your back. If you'll be standing while you work, a table that's 36 inches high is usually suitable. However, if you prefer to sit while you work, you'll want a table that's between 30 and 32 inches tall. Already own a table but find that it's a little short? Use blocks or PVC pipes to lift it to the appropriate height.

  • Utilize Even Small Spaces
If you feel like you already use all the rooms in your home and don't have the budget for an expansion, it's time to get creative with how you use your space. Are there any rooms that you infrequently use? Or, are there any spaces that sit empty most of the time? If you usually eat in the kitchen, you might convert your dining room area into a hobby space. Or, if you have a corner of your living room with a chair that no one ever sits in, swap the chair for a worktable. A closet with the doors removed also makes an excellent hobby area. Built-in shelves and cabinets are a terrific way to add extra storage to small rooms.

Wall Storage

  • Use the Walls for Storage
The walls are a perfect place to hang organizational items that keep your supplies within reach, like a Peg-Board for holding your tools or a magnetic strip for securing scissors and other metal craft supplies. Floating shelves work well for holding craft books, small containers, and other gear that you want to keep close by.

Task Lighting

  • Add Extra Lighting
Even if the space has natural lighting and an overhead light, you'll likely want additional light for your hobby. Ample lighting can even make the room look more appealing to potential buyers when you add your home to the list of Augusta homes for sale. You'll likely want at least one task light that you can adjust to your project's needs. Swap your existing lightbulbs for bulbs designed to mimic the sun's natural light for better illumination.

One of the main benefits of being a homeowner is getting to customize your space, so it's perfect for you and your needs. Looking for a home with more space for your projects? Contact us today to start your search!
