Lost River: Living in West Virginia's Outdoor Beauty

Lost River WV Real Estate
Taking a Long Look at Lost River in Hardy County

If you're interested in buying one of our homes in Hardy County, you probably already know that this is a perfect place for anyone who loves to spend time in the outdoors. Famous for its beautiful mountain scenery, Hardy County offers endless opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, paddling, and just about any other way you can imagine getting in touch with the outside world. If you're the outdoorsy type, our REALTORS® have a few ideas on how you can live life to the fullest in Hardy County's Lost River area.

Trout Pond Recreation Area

Located within the vast George Washington National Forest, Trout Pond Recreation Area is home to two gorgeous lakes. One of these, known as Trout Pond, is the only natural lake in West Virginia and supports a thriving population of native Brook Trout. The recreation area offers great fishing, a sandy lakeside beach, a children's playground and access to several easy walking trails around the lakes. More adventurous hikers can also access longer trails, like the 8.5-mile Long Mountain Trail, which offer more challenging terrain and sweeping mountain views. Camping is also available for tents and RVs at Trout Pond Recreation Area.

Lost River State Park

Spanning 3,712 secluded, densely wooded acres, Lost River State Park is a perfect place for a quiet mountain getaway. More than a dozen hiking trails traverse the rolling landscape, ranging from easy strolls through shady forest to strenuous treks into the mountains. Cabins are available for overnight visitors, and several of the trails are also open to horseback riding and mountain biking. The most famous landmark at Lost River State Park is Cranny Crow overlook, which offers an incredible view that spans five counties from the top of Big Ridge Mountain.

South Branch Potomac River

The South Branch of the Potomac River cuts a meandering path across Hardy County, flowing through lush valleys and serene forests to create an ideal route for canoes, kayaks, and rafts. The river offers some mild to moderate whitewater, most of it easily suitable for novice paddlers, and also includes long sections of smooth, calm water. Access points at Cunningham Road, Fisher Bridge, and Old Fields Bridge, among others, offer plenty of options to start or end a float trip. The river also offers excellent trout fishing.
