Its many unusual traditions make Monterey a fascinating place to visit or live. One of the biggest and best local events that takes place every year is the Highland Maple Festival. Highland, of course, is the beautiful county where little Monterey is located.

The 61st Annual Highland Maple Festival is Almost Here

Held on the weekends of March 9-10 and March 16-17, the Highland Maple Festival is a truly special showcase celebrating Highland County "Virginia's Sweet Spot."

It has been held every year since 1958 and has even been recognized by the Library of Congress as one of the most important cultural events taking place in the local area.

Thousands of visitors make the annual trek to this rural paradise to celebrate the opening of the maple trees, a staple of industry here for many decades.

Fascinating events will keep you entertained all throughout the festival:

  • Maple Festival Food
    What would a street festival be without delicious food? Treats infused with maple syrup are the cornerstone of a delightful culinary experience. Pancake dinners – your choice of regular or buckwheat – are held on festival days. Many local restaurants have a limited-time festival menu, too.
  • Juried Arts & Crafts Show
    Hosting more than 100 local artisans and artists, this juried show will give you the opportunity to peruse mementos like jewelry, glassware, photography, pottery, textiles, and carvings. With six locations to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect treasure to bring home.
  • Live Entertainment
    Local bands will bust out their best all throughout the festival. Artists including the Southern Rail Express, Tyler Hughes, Delta Junction, and many others will be playing. Some will be situated in Highland Center, the chief local venue, while others will play at nearby restaurants.
  • Highland History Museum
    You shouldn't pass up the chance to see the Highland History Museum, the place to see local history come to life. Many artifacts from the Civil War's Battle of McDowell are found here, as well as exhibits dating back to the county's formation in 1847.
