  • Showalter's Orchard & Greenhouse - 17768 Honeyville Rd., Timberville, VA 22853
    While Showalter's Orchard & Greenhouse first opened for business in 1965, apples have been grown continuously on the property since the early 1900s. In 1975, Joe and Frances Showalter added a cider press to make use of the "blemished" apples that would otherwise go to waste. Today, Shannon Showalter and his wife Sarah continue his parents' legacy with pick-your-own apples and peaches.     Do you dream of strawberry shortcake on a warm summer day? It's even better with freshly-picked berries from Overlook Produce and Farm Adventures. During fall, pick your own pumpkins and gourds for festive holiday decorations while the kids try to solve the five-acre corn maze. Fill the pantry and fridge with the assortment of fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat sold at the on-site market. Add some natural beauty to your home with some ficus or African violets from the greenhouse. Overlook Produce is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

  • Hobbit Hill Farm - 6460 Showalter Rd., Mount Crawford, VA 22841
    Who says healthy foods don't taste good? Blueberries are high in nutrients, low in calories, and full of juicy sweetness. Take the whole family to pick your own blueberries at the delightfully-named Hobbit Hill Farm. This family-owned farm on the banks of the North River, and near Mount Crawford homes for sale, features USDA-certified organic blueberries, which are "only touched by rain and sunshine." Call ahead for hours.

  • Pebble Hall Wildflowers & Herbs - 11 Pebble Hall Ln., Weyers Cave, VA 24486
    Fresh herbs are a wonderful way to flavor your food without adding fat and calories. Spend an afternoon picking herbs by the bag at Pebble Hall Wildflowers & Herbs. Seasonal varieties available include basil, chives, fennel, mint, oregano, sage, tarragon, and thyme. You can also build colorful bouquets of baby's breath, calendula, daffodils, poppies, zinnias, and other wildflowers blooming in the gardens or greenhouse. Even if you don't pick anything, it's worth the trip to stroll the dog-friendly grounds, explore the nature museum, and enjoy a picnic lunch near Weyers Cave homes for sale. Admission is $5 for ages 16 and up, which includes a small bouquet. Hours are 6 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily.

    Pamper yourself with the soothing properties of lavender from White Oak Lavender Farm & The Purple Wolf Vineyard. This stunning farm produces more than 8,000 lavender plants and 3,000 grapevines, creating a sea of purple. Purchase bath and beauty products, oils, candles, and other specialty items from the on-site shop, or pick your own fresh lavender. They'll even provide the scissors! You'll feel instantly relaxed in the farm's Discovery Area, where you can view farm animals and a life-size checkerboard or simply sit beside the pond. Sample lavender wine or refreshing slushies and sangria in the tasting room at The Purple Wolf Vineyard near Harrisonburg homes for sale. Admission is $3, with an $8 fee to pick up to 50 lavender stems. Guided tours are offered for $10, which includes admission.  White Oak Lavender Farm is open daily from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Today's farmers markets began in 1934 with an idea and two entrepreneurs from Los Angeles.   What started as one market with a dozen farmers plus a few others selling fresh produce from the back of their trucks has evolved into over 8,600 farmers markets nationwide.

As demand for locally grown, fresh food continues to grow, so too have the opportunities for America's farmers to market fresh food directly to the consumer. 

Our hometown of Harrisonburg, VA joins other communities across the country in celebrating National Farmers Market Week August 6 - 12.

Long-time Harrisonburg locals might remember Clarence Dellinger, a local farmer, selling his produce in the Harrisonburg Police Station's parking lot in the 1950s.  As time passed, the Market incorporated in 1994 as a Producer Only Market and has been our community's source for fresh, locally grown foods and crafts for over 30 years.  The Downtown Harrisonburg Farmers Market operated in the Liberty Street Parking Deck's lower level until moving to its current home in the Turner Pavilion at 228 South Liberty Street in 2006.

What National Farmers Market Highlights

Now in its 18th year, National Farmers Market Week (NFMW) is an annual event sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  It highlights the important role farmers markets play in the nation's food and economic systems. NFMW is held on the first full week of August. NFMW spotlights community farmers markets nationwide and is an opportunity for all farmers markets to showcase the impact they make in their local areas.

Farmers markets across the country:

  • Support America's farmlands and rural livelihood
  • Grow local economies
  • Provide access to locally produced fresh foods and goods
  • Encourage healthier communities

What began as a way to bring fresh, healthy foods to communities across the country has grown into a social gathering for entire communities.  As markets continue to evolve, new features like live entertainment, cooking demonstrations with recipe sharing, gardening advice and classes have been added.

So, you've been dreaming of moving to the country. Whether you want to become a professional farmer or have a passion for living in the country and growing your own produce, buying agricultural land can be a complex process.  Here is a guide for things to consider before buying a farm.

1.  Define Your Goals.

You want to become a farmer and buy land in the country.  Each person has their own reasons why they want to own or work on a farm.   Before going down the path of actually buying agricultural real estate, ask yourself these questions to help determine your goals:

  • Do you want to own a farm and make a living as a professional farmer?
  • Do you want to become a "weekend" farmer and grow produce for your family's needs?
  • Are you looking for a real estate investment?

2.  Find the Right Location.

Finding the right piece of real estate goes along with defining your goals.  If you want to buy a working farm, determine where the nearest market for selling your produce is located.  Make sure the neighborhood suits you and the type of farming you want to do. 

If your plan is to live in the country enjoying a quieter, simpler lifestyle, then buying farm property away from a larger community might be for you.

5.  Zoning.

Zoning for agricultural property is in place to restrict non-farm uses of land.  The use of land, minimum farm size, and non-farm use buildings on the property can be determined by local zoning laws.  Working with experienced REALTORS® who have a knowledge of selling farm property will help you understand your limitations for use before you buy.

6.  Know what's included with your real estate purchase.

It is important for all parties involved to understand what is included with the purchase before the transaction is completed.  Buying farm equipment, building fences, gates and structures can be expensive.  A detailed list of everything included with the purchase needs to be a part of the contract.

7.  Water.

When searching for the perfect farm, its water supply is an essential resource to consider.  Are there streams, ponds or rivers on the property?  Is there standing water?  Find out more about water quality standards by visiting your state's Department of Health or Department of Natural Resources web site.  Learn how to take a water sample and where to send it for testing.

8.  Soil.

Whether or not land can be farmed is determined primarily by soil type.  Know your soil limitations before buying farm land.  To learn about your potential property's soil limitations, visit the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) web site and search the farm's site address.  Take a soil sample and send to a nearby soil-testing to test the soil for nutrients and deficiencies.
