Breweries on the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail

Beerwerks Trail

If you've been looking at Augusta or Rockingham County homes for sale recently, odds are good you've learned about one of the many things that makes our area special: The flourishing craft brewery scene. Nowhere is that more evident than on the local Beerwerks Trail here in the Shenandoah Valley.

The Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail consists of more than a dozen local breweries and stretches across some of the area's most desirable communities. You are welcome to explore the trail on your own and make your stops wherever you wish. Local tour companies also offer a guided group experience on the trail.

You may already be familiar with the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail, which offers a similar experience for the vineyards and wineries here in Virginia. Just as the Wine Trail showcases all the outstanding new developments in wine, the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail does the same for the craft brewing scene.

Let's take a closer look at just a few of the many fun and exciting stops along the way:

  • Elkton Brewing Company – 100 North Fifth Street, Elkton, VA 22827
Elkton Brewing Company is only minutes from some of the best Elkton homes for sale. It brings an age-old family recipe dating from the early 1900s to the Elkton area – a legendary Austrian brew that is now available to the public for the first time. The brewery is located within the spacious yet historic setting of the old Elkton Milling Company building, which was originally founded back in 1890.

  • Brew HaHa Brewing Company 11704 Spotswood Trail, Elkton, VA 22827
Brew HaHa Brewing Company stands out as the newest brewery to enter the ranks of the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail. Located near the entry of famous Massanutten Resort, it warmly welcomes beer aficionados as well as those who'd prefer something non-alcoholic. In addition to its "nanobrewery" craft beers, you'll also find small-batch craft sodas with memorable flavors derived from local ingredients.

  • Skipping Rock Beer Company – 414 Parkersburg Turnpike, Staunton, VA 24401
Skipping Rock Beer Company is all about worrying less and living more. Nothing encapsulates that idea better than a high-quality craft beer that's "a reflection of place" from right here in the Shenandoah Valley. Beers that have been lovingly handcrafted down to the smallest detail will greet you along with a relaxed and casual atmosphere full of old friends and new ones who you haven't met yet. As a watering hole near Staunton homes for sale, it simply can't be beaten.

  • The Friendly Fermenter – 20 South Mason Street, Suite B10, Harrisonburg, VA 22801
The Friendly Fermenter is here to make the whole experience of craft brewing "friendlier" than ever. Just a short hop from Harrisonburg homes for sale, it approaches this goal with the town's very first DIY "brew on-site" shop. Drop in any time and the helpful staff will be there to show you the ropes. Want to take the hobby home with you? There's also a full assortment of different brewing gear to buy.

  • Brothers Craft Brewing – 800 North Main Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22801
Brothers Craft Brewing, originally known as Three Brothers Brewing, offers both large-scale brewing and small, experimental batches you can sample during your own journey down the trail. The brewery is well known in the area for its monthly charity events and its deep involvement in the community. Live music, games, fundraisers, and much more await you, with local food trucks frequently found nearby.

  • Seven Arrows Brewing 2508 Jefferson Highway #1, Waynesboro, VA 22980
Seven Arrows Brewing features a large taproom that gives visitors access to many different offerings of the brand, its lagers foremost among them. Twelve iconic beers are always available, with a rotating cast of characters taking up the rest of the menu. Seven Arrows distinguishes itself with a full kitchen, a lasting collaboration with Nobos Restaurant. It's a terrific pick near Waynesboro homes for sale.

  • Stable Craft Brewing – 375 Madrid Road, Waynesboro, VA 22980
If you are paying a visit to the horses of the Hermitage Hill Farm and Stables, a working horse farm in Waynesboro, then you'll want to top off your visit by swinging by Stable Craft Brewing. This brewery's barn venue fits right in with the action of the real working farm, and the tours end here so you can get some refreshment. And "fresh" it is: Stable Craft grows its own authentic Cascade and Nugget hops!

Tri-County Fair Preview: Get Ready for Summer Fun

Hardy County Fair

Few annual events in eastern West Virginia are more hotly anticipated than the Tri-County Fair. As always, our real estate agents are excited to welcome the fair back to Petersburg, WV!

Just like in years past, there will be a lot to take in. The 2022 fair will include live music and entertainment, various animal shows and exhibitions, a parade, demolition derby, and a midway packed with rides, games, and carnival attractions. And it's all happening minutes away from these Hardy County homes for sale

A Little History...

The Tri-County Fair is a long-running tradition here in West Virginia. The fair made its debut in 1920, which means that it's been going strong for over 100 years now. Of course, the Tri-County Fair has changed a lot since its early days, but the spirit of celebration remains the same.

Mostly, the fair has just gotten bigger! Back in 1920, it was simply a 4-H/open class exhibit at the old Petersburg Courthouse. Over the years, the Tri-County Fair has continued to expand, growing to incorporate exhibits of agriculture, livestock, floriculture, art, and home economics.

It's put together every year as a collaboration between Grant, Hardy, and Pendleton Counties, and folks come from all around to enjoy the festivities.

Tri-County Fair 2022

We know we could say this every year, but there are a lot of reasons to get excited about the Tri-County Fair in 2022! This year's fair takes place from July 29 through August 6, which means we have nine full days of fun to get ready for. Some of the events we're most looking forward to include:

Tri-County Fair

  • Midway Rides - Starting Monday, August 1, midway rides at the Tri-County Fair will be open daily at 6 pm. Every year's assortment of rides is a little different, but you can count on a wide range of carnival favorites, including a tilt-a-whirl, merry-go-round, and Ferris wheel.

  • Exhibits - Exhibits will be shown (and prizes given) throughout the fair in categories including produce, flowers, baked goods, canning, art, and photography. All residents of Grant, Hardy, and Pendleton counties are welcome to enter and compete in the exhibits (learn more here).

  • Live Entertainment - You can expect some great performances at this year's Tri-County Fair, including live music from The Hoppers ("America's favorite Gospel music family") and family-friendly entertainment from Dewayne Hill ("Americas Funniest comedy Magician"). Capping it all off will be a performance from country star Josh Turner at the fairgrounds' bandstand on the evening of August 2.

Parade

  • Parade - Always a favorite event at the Tri-County Fair, this year's parade gets moving at 6 pm on Wednesday, August 3.

Agriculture

  • Livestock Exhibitions - There will be livestock exhibitions, shows, and showmanship competitions throughout the fair, including an FFA horse show, breeder cattle show, pig scramble, and "Sheep & Goat Skill-a-Thon." Check out the full schedule to learn more about the various events featuring beef, sheep, goats, rabbits, poultry, and other critters.

Demolition Derby

  • Demolition Derby - As the grand finale of the Tri-County Fair, the whole event will be capped off with Demolition Derby at 7 pm on Saturday, August 6. Expect plenty of thrills and surprises, and stick around to see who ends up being the last man standing!

Mark your calendars for the fair today! A $20 season ticket will get you into the fair every day and entry into every event except for the Josh Turner concert and the Demolition Derby. No gate admission will be charged on Saturday, July 30, and Sunday, July 31.

Find Your Way to the Fair

The fair takes place at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, located at 107 Rig Street in Petersburg, WV. The fairgrounds are nestled at the east end of the village, right around the corner from Petersburg Elementary School and Viking Memorial Stadium.

It's a perfect location for the Tri-County Fair because it's not only within walking distance of many Grant County homes for sale but also just minutes away from Hardy and Pendleton Counties as well. Get to know more about local homes for sale and meet our real estate agents when you visit this year's fair. Our agents will have a booth you can stop at while you're there!

The Tri-County Fair is also just a little over two hours from Washington, DC, and Charlottesville, VA.

Contact us today to learn more about living life to the fullest in West Virginia! It's an amazing place to call home, and if you're looking for a place to call your own in Grant County and the surrounding areas, our real estate agents are here to help every step of the way.

Summer Learning: Augusta County Historical Places

Augusta County

Shhh! Don't tell the kids, but learning can be fun. Our real estate agents love to combine culture and entertainment at these impressive historical attractions near Augusta County homes for sale.

  • Frontier Culture Museum - 1290 Richmond Rd., Staunton, VA 24401
How did the early immigrants blend their histories to create a new culture in the colonies? Learn about their fascinating stories at the Frontier Culture Museum. Permanent exhibits include replicas of West African, Irish, English, German, and Native American farms from the 1700s along with an 1820s American farmhouse and early American schoolhouse. The museum also hosts lectures, concerts, and special holiday events. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for high school and college students, and $7 for ages 6-12. Hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily through December 1.

  • Bare House and Mill - 157 Wilda Rd., Stuarts Draft, VA 24477
Bare House and Mill, situated on scenic fields not far from Stuarts Draft homes for sale, are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While the original home was destroyed by fire in the mid-1850s, it was soon replaced by a Greek Revival/Italianate two-story brick home that still stands. The mill, which was shut down after the 1870 floods, has been ravaged by time, although the limestone ruins hold evidence of a rare undershot wheel.

  • Valley Railroad Stone Bridge - Jolivue, VA 24401
As air travel has taken over as the preferred method of transportation, structures such as the Valley Railroad Stone Bridge have become a rare sight. The four-arch bridge, which spans Folly Mills Creek, was constructed in 1884 as part of the Valley Railroad line connecting Staunton and Lexington. While the line was discontinued in 1942 and the tracks were subsequently removed, the stunning bridge has been maintained as a charming landmark for area travelers. The remarkable masonry engineering displayed by the bridge landed it on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • The Stonewall Brigade Band - Gypsy Hill Park, 600 Churchville Ave., Staunton, VA 24401
Art meets history with the Stonewall Brigade Band, the oldest continuous community band in the country. In 1855, the band started with all brass instruments as the Mountain Saxhorn Band. Since then, it's grown into a full band, adding woodwind and percussion instruments. The Stonewall Brigade Band performs free summer concerts at 8 p.m. each Monday night from June through August. Their Gypsy Hill Park bandstand, built expressly for the band, dates back to 1889.

  • R.R. Smith Center for History and Art - 20 S. New St., Staunton, VA 24401
Local culture is showcased at the R.R. Smith Center for History and Art, housed in an 1894 hotel in Staunton's Beverley Historic District. The building is home to the Staunton Augusta Art Center, with exhibits that change every six weeks, and the Augusta County Historical Society, which holds archives that can be used for ancestral research. Be sure to stroll the adjacent Mevluda Tahirovic Memorial Garden, a lovely tribute to the donor's late fiancée. Gallery hours are 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.

  • Harnsberger Octagonal Barn - Weyers Cave, VA 24486
Built around 1867, the Harnsberger Octagonal Barn is a significant departure from the classic red-sided rectangular barns. The unusual design was influenced by architectural theories that were in fashion after the Civil War. Local carpenter William Evers supervised construction, and the barn is still in use, not far from Weyers Cave homes for sale.

  • Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum - 20 N. Coalter St., Staunton, VA 24401
As the 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson helped lead our country during the early years of the 20th century. Today, the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum is located in the city of his birth, right down the street from Staunton homes for sale. Tour his family home, and explore seven galleries featuring artifacts from Wilson's life and times. Admission is $15 for adults and $8 for ages 6-17. Hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily except Sunday when doors open at noon.

Apples in Shenandoah ValleyFall is in the air, and it's the best time of year to visit your local farms in the Shenandoah Valley! Our real estate agents love this season because of the amazing variety of available crops—apples, grapes, pumpkins—and the fun fall festivals that return year after year.

If you happen to be in the Charlottesville or Harrisonburg area this fall, be sure to check out some of our favorite local farms, orchards, and markets!

  • Back Home on the Farm - 2915 Willow Run Rd, Harrisonburg, VA 22802
Offering one of the most fun-packed farm experiences in Virginia, Back Home on the Farm is the sort of place you'll want to visit again in every season. But in fall, the farm is abuzz with activity, including wagon rides, you-pick pumpkins, nightly campfires, and a 7-acre corn maze. The farm is located just outside Harrisonburg, convenient to many Harrisonburg homes for sale.

  • Showalter's Orchard & Greenhouse - 17768 Honeyville Rd, Timberville, VA 22853
Showalter's Orchard & Greenhouse is a popular wedding venue in addition to being a working farm, and it's not hard to see why. The place is stunning, with spectacular views across acres of rolling farmland. Autumn is pick-your-own apple season here, and the farm grows more than 30 varieties. Be sure to check out the cider (hard and otherwise) that is made right here on the farm, just minutes from these Timberville homes for sale.

About the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail

Shenandoah Valley Wine TrailLooking for an all-new way to experience the Shenandoah Valley? Our real estate agents have it!

Shenandoah Valley homes for sale run the gamut of styles, but beautiful surroundings are the norm no matter your architectural tastes. From across Virginia and all throughout the country, people visit year-round to drink in the sights and unique culture of the Shenandoah Valley area.

The Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail helps show it all off in an experience you'll never forget!

Shenandoah Valley's Unique Wine Trail Helps You See All That Makes the Area Great

The Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail is full of surprises on its 200-mile stretch of wineries, breweries, and cideries. As you venture from one end to the other of this north-south trail, you'll see so much of what makes Virginia unique.

Nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and Allegheny Mountains to the west, the Valley runs from the state line of West Virginia down to the James River. The Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail provides a family-friendly (and largely pet-friendly!) opportunity to explore it all.

Not surprisingly, the wine trail is an epicenter of family-owned businesses. In addition to the different beverage-makers, you'll also find plenty of antique stores, art shops, and housewares vendors.

You'll pass through many communities if you're determined to see all the trail has to offer. Small, historic villages are plentiful, as are college towns.

While winery visits reach their height in the fall, most businesses along the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail are open year-round.

Unique growing conditions and soil of the Shenandoah Valley have given rise to a profusion of grape varietals. Rocky, fertile soil, and a mild, relatively dry growing season have attracted wineries of all sizes and styles. Virtually all of them have gotten in on the fun and now offer tours and tasting rooms open to the public.

Let's take a closer look at some of the wineries you can stop at on the trail!

The Winery at Kindred Pointe 3575 Conicville Road, Mt. Jackson, VA 22842
Owners Amy and Bruce Helsey bought the property for The Winery at Kindred Pointe in 2005 and named the spot after one of Amy's favorite books, Anne of Green Gables. What started out as a horse boarding business has grown into a beloved winery near Mount Jackson homes for sale. Pick up a bottle of wine from their historical series, which features artwork of local historical significance by artist John Paul Strain.

Barren Ridge Vineyards  – 984 Barren Ridge Road, Fishersville, VA 22939
In the late 1800s, a small apple orchard was planted, which became the modern-day Barren Ridge Winery we know and love. Located near Fisherville homes for sale, this winery offers stunning views of West Virginia and the Alleghany Mountains. Take in the views and sip on local wine from their tasting room.

12 Ridges Vineyard – 24981 Blue Ridge Parkway, Vesuvius, VA 24483
12 Ridges Vineyard is a cool climate vineyard and tasting room where your palate will dance with flavors from the Shenandoah Valley and around the world. The brand focuses on a traditional sparkling wine with the goal of becoming the foremost in Virginia. Tastings can be done on the terrace or outside on the scenic hilltop, all within driving distance from Vesuvius homes for sale.

Honey & Hops Brew Works – 212 East Main Street A, Front Royal, VA 22630
Honey & Hops Brew Works will introduce you to mead, a trend that's sweeping the nation. Using familiar principles of fermentation with honey rather than grapes, Honey & Hops offers rich, award-winning flavors: The favorite may be Black Trails blueberry mead. "Mead and Chocolate" events are popular for couples. Check them out after looking at Front Royal homes for sale

Sage Bird Ciderworks – 325 North Liberty Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22802

Classic Virginia Dishes - Where to Find Them in the Shenandoah Valley

Virginia Dishes

If you've been exploring Virginia homes for sale, you'll definitely want to get to know some of the best local food! From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay, each region has its own culinary delights. While seafood ranks at the top of the list, the area is also well-known for other tasty treats, including some of the best-fried chicken you'll ever taste.

We recently asked our real estate agents to name their favorite area restaurants that serve up local specialties. Here are their recommendations.

  • Edinburg Mill Restaurant: 214 South Main St., Edinburg, VA 22824
The historic Edinburg Mill building has been a Virginia landmark since 1848. The Edinburg Mill Restaurant, located on the lower level, is well-known for serving delicious dishes made from locally sourced ingredients and incredible seafood. You may not realize that Virginia is the top oyster producer on the East Coast. Since it's so easy to get them fresh, dishes featuring this ingredient are extremely popular among locals and visitors alike. Edinburg Mill serves incredible Chesapeake Oysters that are dusted, friend, and served with hot sauce and tarragon aioli. If you're in the area looking at Edinburg homes for sale, we recommend paying this iconic restaurant a visit.
  • Rhodes Seafood: 173 McCauley Ave., Timberville, VA 22853
When our agents are in the area showing Timberville homes for sale, they love visiting Rhodes Seafood. This small, family-run restaurant has been pleasing locals for 20 years. They offer a huge selection of fresh seafood, including oysters in the half shell, breaded oysters, and shrimp served with the shell on, peeled, or breaded. Selection is one of the biggest selling points here. Rhodes' Seafood offers various options, including your choice of sauces, breading, spices, and mixes. We love the fact that we can visit time and again and never have the same thing twice.

  • Spring House Tavern: 325 South Main St., Woodstock, VA 22664
Nothing says local quite like a delicious piece of southern fried chicken. There are many great restaurants serving this simple yet incredible dish. One of the most popular is Spring House Tavern. This iconic restaurant has been family-owned for over 19 years and is loved by the locals. We recommend the Chicken-Fried Chicken. This savory dish features fresh chicken deep-fried in Lefty's homemade breading and served with their signature creamy white-pepper gravy. The Spring House is also located near many of the best Woodstock homes for sale, so consider taking a drive around after dinner.
  • Southern Kitchen: 9576 South Congress St., New Market, VA 22844
Are you looking for the best fried chicken in Shenandoah County? Look no further than Southern Kitchen! They're famous for their fried chicken dishes, which they serve with your choice of sides like mac n' cheese, freshly sliced home fries, or buttered carrots. This locally owned family restaurant is known for its home-cooked meals, just like grandma makes. If you've been thinking about moving into one of the beautiful New Market homes for sale, you'll definitely want to get to know Southern Kitchen.
  • Town and Country Restaurant: 21 West Lee St., Broadway, VA 22815
You can't live in Virginia without sampling the south's favorite cheese spread -- pimento cheese! This classic dish is made with cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, and sweet peppers. Locals enjoy it melted on toast, with ham, and on top of various savory dishes. While you'll find pimento cheese on many local menus, we can't get enough of Pimento Cheese Sandwich at Town and Country Restaurant. They're known for having some of the BEST homecooked meals, and we couldn't agree more! Add a side of onion rings or an order of their fresh-made potato wedges for a meal you won't soon forget. You may be surprised to see how many great Broadway homes for sale are located nearby, so plan to spend some time exploring the area when you visit.

  • The Cheese Place: 3105 John Wayland Highway, Dayton, VA 22821
If you love all things cheese, then you'll want to spend lots of time at The Cheese Place. This family-owned and operated business is one of the best local places to find not only pimento cheese but just about any other kind you can think of. They also carry pasta, soup mixes, spices, seasonings, nuts, candy, cereal, oats, dried fruit, and more. If you're thinking about moving into one of the great Dayton homes for sale, you're sure to become a regular here.

In case you haven't heard, the Shenandoah Valley is becoming an increasingly popular region for grape growing and the Bluestone Vineyard is taking full advantage of the climate by producing nationally recognized wines. This family-owned vineyard specializes in small-batch wines that evolve from year to year to capture the true taste of the Valley. Their tasting room wine list dwindles by the day as older red, white, sweet, and reserve wines are uncorked for visitors from around the country. We recommend heading in on National Drink Wine Day to taste the 2013 Houndstooth Bordeaux blend, the 2016 Chambourcin Steep Face, and the 2013 Petite Verdot before they're gone.

And, of course, you'll witness amazing views any time you head up on the lifts.

A Local's Guide to Christmas in Moorefield

Moorefield Christmas
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and that may never be truer than in Moorefield, WV. Our Moorefield real estate agents are here to share some of the sights and sounds you won't want to miss during the Christmas season.

Celebrate the Season in Moorefield, WV

When should the Christmas tree go up--before Thanksgiving or after Thanksgiving?  It's a discussion more than one Moorefield homeowner has had with their families. No matter what your personal resolution might be, the Moorefield Lions Club along with the Hardy County Historical Society and the Town of Moorefield say "after Thanksgiving" is the answer.

Our local celebration, beginning on December 2, is the Moorefield Community Christmas Tree Lighting at Welton Park complete with a holiday parade, Santa arriving by horse-drawn carriage, and a band of singing elves.  Santa himself lights our community Christmas tree (donated by May Tree Farm) to welcome the holidays to Moorefield.

All Aboard The Snowflake Express

Come to the South Side Depot on December 7 for a train ride on the Snowflake Express.  Santa and his elves welcome you with cookies and hot chocolate on a train ride to the Festival of Lights.  Say hello to Elsa and Olaf, have a picture with Santa, and sing your favorite carols with our special guests.

Old Time Christmas at Welton Park

A visit to the Mountain State's Old Time Christmas in Petersburg is sure to spark the holiday spirit in all of us.  You'll be in Christmas "awe" as you stroll through the Christmas Festival of Lights at Welton Park.  Enjoy horse-drawn sleigh rides, a visit with Santa, twinkling lights, and a special reading of Clement Moore's "Twas the Night Before Christmas."

Welton Park a Center of Activity at Christmas and All Year Long

Welton Park is one of Moorefield, WV's biggest attractions, and this beautiful, historic outdoor space offers opportunities for fishing, picnicking, hiking, and kayaking. Of course, the park's biggest claim to fame is hosting the town's annual Christmas holiday light display every year. The event seems to grow each year, with as many as 15,000 people gathering to take part in the ceremony. Folks travel from all over to see the holiday lights.

Contact Old Dominion Realty today to learn more about life in the Moorefield, WV area. It's a beautiful place to spend the holidays, but we also think it's a wonderful place to call home in any season. Hotel Madison's opening in May 2018 provided a means for the community, James Madison University, and business leaders from across the Shenandoah Valley and beyond to connect.  While interest in a location to hold conferences and conventions in the area existed from some time, facilities large enough to accommodate such meetings had been missing. The hotel charges an additional charge for their stay.

Visitors have easy access to the facility from I-81, Route 11, and the Shenandoah Regional Airport.  It's location at the corner of Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way places Hotel Madison in Harrisonburg's Downtown on James Madison University's campus next to Madison Hall, site of Undergraduate Admissions.

An Air of Sophistication and Rustic Charm

Hotel and conference center guests find an atmosphere of simple elegance alongside superior amenities during their stay. Here you'll find rooms with mountain and downtown views, a farm-to-table restaurant, and spacious ballrooms and boardrooms.  Hotel Madison offers valet parking and concierge service to ensure that visitors have access to area information and can experience all the wonders of the region. The hotel boasts 230 beautifully appointed guest rooms and offers special packages throughout the year. Hotel guests certainly won't go hungry either.
